We have run a Junior Citizen programme for Years 5 and 6 (10 and 11 year olds) since we opened in 2009 and this is our most popular visit. It focuses on some of the important safety and citizenship issues around increasing independence as children begin thinking about the move to secondary school.
From January 2013, we will be offering a programme for Years 3 and 4 for the first time. Safeside at Handsworth's Junior Citizen programme covers issues such as road, water, car, pedestrian and fire safety in an exciting tour of seven realistic scenarios. A fire and road safety workshop is also available either before or after the main tour.
The Year 5 & 6 visit to Safeside at Eastside is a full day and consists of two main parts. In small groups, pupils experience an interactive tour of our realistic safety village which takes two hours. Schools can then choose up to two 55 minutes workshops which take place in our classrooms for whole classes. These look at some issues in greater depth. The workshops take place either before or after the main tour, depending on arrangements.
The Year 5/6 programme builds on and extends the earlier Y3/4 scheme, so ideally your pupils would visit Safeside twice at Key Stage 2.
