N-GAGE - interactive lifeskills education for 11-14s

N-GAGE is the latest programme from Safeside, the experiential safety and citizenship education centre from West Midlands Fire Service. N-GAGE is an interactive lifeskills programme for youth groups and is suitable for young people from 11-14 years (school years 7-9 at Key Stage 3).

Content

Following a brief introduction, visitors are split into small groups and led by a trained Presenter around 10 different interactive scenarios in our realistic safety village. These include: -

  • In car safety (using our real people-mover vehicle)
  • Consequences of crime/ railway safety (on our train)
  • Drugs awareness (in our kitchen scene)
  • Fire safety (upstairs in our house)
  • Road safety (at the working pedestrian crossing)
  • Internet safety (at Safebytes, our internet cafe)
  • Personal safety (in the dark alleyway)
  • Responsible travel (using our double decker bus)
  • Consequences of crime (in the Safeside Youth Court)
  • Water safety (alongside our canal)

Other themes such as environmental responsibility and what to do in an emergency are interwoven throughout the tour. An interactive quiz concludes the visit.

Badges

The programme can contribute towards:-

  • Girl Guiding Badges, especially Fire Safety, First Aid, Independent Living, Personal Safety and Water Safety
  • Scouting Badges such as Fire Safety and Lifesaver (Water Safety)
  • City of Birmingham Children's University - we are an accredited Learning Destination and visitors can be credited with two hours of learning if they bring their Learning Passports on the visit

Availability

 This two-hour programme is available at some of the following times:-

  • After school (4-6pm)
  • School night evenings (6.15 - 8.15pm)
  • Saturdays (10-12noon and 1-3pm)
  • School holidays (10-12noon and 1-3pm)

Cost

There is a charge of £7 per young person. Accompanying staff are free up to a ratio of 1:6. For school groups during school hours, we can offer the visit at only £5 per pupil.
