Fire Crew Plus (KS3/4)

Fire Crew Plus is aimed at secondary school students ages (KS3/4) and focuses on fire safety, teamwork, problem solving and the work of the fire service.
This visit can be either a half day or full day event. On a half day tour the school can choose which modules they want included to create a bespoke visit to suit the group.
Each module lasts for one hour and is £3 per head. If a school wishes to have a full day visit of four modules then the overall cost is £10 per day.
The modules are as follows.
Module 1: Hose running and drill yard exercise. Students get the opportunity to carry out a genuine fire fighter hose drill, spray water and run hoses wearing authentic fire fighter style kit. NB this module is not available in icy conditions.
Module 2: Casualty search in a “smoked out “ or darkened building. Dressed in fire fighter kit students are briefed, organised in watches (teams) and carry out a search of the fire training building and rescue a casualty. After the casualty has been rescued the students will be required to draw from memory their plan of the building they have just cleared. Available all year round.
Module 3: Fire station tour. Consists of two exercises.
  1. 30 minute tour in the appliance bay and pole room. An inner city fire fighters role is discussed and the importance of carrying out vehicle and emergency equipment checks. If the appliances are available students will have a tour of the fire appliances and related equipment. The students will then go to the pole and Firecat room before discussing the importance of local awareness and knowledge. NB appliances cannot be guaranteed to be present as this is a working fire station.
  2. The students will then go to the fire safety house and after discussing the fire triangle and witnessing the flashover effect in our purpose built facility they will be asked to carry out a home fire safety check using the concepts of the fire triangle.
Module 4: Basic Life Support. While students may have already had a first aid input, this is a useful addition to the days activities teaching and refreshes knowledge of CPR, recovery position and the management of burn injuries. As part of the assessment process students will be asked in their group to maintain effective CPR for 5 minutes to replicate waiting for medical assistance.
