All volunteers undergo training before being able to perform their role. Training begins with a 3 hour classroom-based session for up to 20 new guides. This covers all the necessary background to volunteering at Safeside including:-
- Background to Safeside
- Tour of the safety village
- Roles and responsibilities
- Child protection
- Health and safety
- Equality and diversity
- Teaching and learning styles and techniques
Trainees are then expected to 'shadow' more experienced Mentor Guides for at least 4 sessions as they lead school tours. This gives them a good chance of learning the programme script in situ.
When they are ready, trainee guides will lead groups under the supervision of a Mentor Guide.
Trainees will be assessed by staff in consultation with the trainee and mentors, before being able to take groups by themselves.
Guides are regularly monitored and in service training days take place several times each year.
